Oneness of Chan and tea is what one could experience, and only those who felt it knows how it feels. Using an analogy, only those who sipped the water knows how warm or cold is the water he drank. To experience the oneness, one needs to sit alone and quietly, making and drinking tea again and again. As you conduct such ceremony for enough times, you’ll be able to experience such oneness of Chan and Tea. I once wrote a poem – “Chan Masters and Tea Makers/ Are eventually inseparable / Chan manifest itself in tea making / While tea gets more tasty with Chan. ” This illustrates the inter-dependent relationship of Chan and tea. It is beyond words. You have to drink it and experience it yourself. It is a kind of feeling and awakening.
The word “Chan” in “Chan Practice” or “Chan Concentration” comes from Sanskrit word dhyāna
, which means quiet contemplation with a concentrated mind. It is nothing mysterious. Nowadays, many people talk about Chan as if it is very mysterious and beyond our reach; however, it is as simple as that - quiet contemplation with a concentrated mind.
We practice Chan meditation with tea ceremony, during which the six organs are connected and facilitating one another.
The six organs refer to the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind. We see the form of the tea with our eyes, smell it with our noses, taste it with our tongues, hear the sounds with our ears, and touch the tea cups with our hands and body. This is called contact or sensation. The mind also works during this process. We see the six organs collaborating. The six organs contact the six senses, producing the six perceptions, together they are called the eighteen realms. Practicing this way, we could improve our concentration.
Conducting the twelve steps of the Chan and Tea ceremony, we could quickly improve our concentration. It is a very good way to practice.
Meanwhile, the ceremony could help promote the Chinese Chan and Tea culture, demonstrating sincerity and kindness, cultivating graceful and noble disposition.
